How to Buy a Right Laptop for Yourself?

If you are confused with the dozen of options, break your requirements in three parts as the brand name – hardware stuff – system software or operating system.

Brand Name

Not all brands are same, we already saw the list of best laptop brands above and there is no doubt that all of them are designed for the specific need. So pick one which is easily available at your location, which has nearest service center (for future repairs and maintenance), and finally budget you would like to spend.

Hardware Stuff

On mobile motherboard which is used in laptops, you may find numbers of the technical term. Like Processors, RAM, Graphics, Storage and Touch Screen. Here you need to make a plan what you need. Since these terms are always confusing we are briefing these in short.

Screen Size: The screen size is a major factor for any laptop. If you are a game lover then you should go for big screen above 15 inches. If you are a student then you need 12 to 15-inch laptop. For entrepreneurs, the laptop screen should be also on average size like 13 inches. Today, the laptops displays exceed 15 inches, the display size of many desktops. The drawback of these systems can easily weight triple times as much as an ultra-light.

Processors: Now we come to the master of all the things and work, the Processor. Processor helps the complete system to respond and process the data with particular clock speed. There are various generations of processors which are available in the market. Like – Atom, Pentium, Celeron, etc.

These processors and their generations basically describe the working speed of the system. Nowadays there is stiff competition between Intel and AMD and these are the two major key-players in processor manufacturing industry. Intel has Atom, Pentium, Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, and i7 whereas AMD has A, FX, E-Series, and Ryzen. They are for beginners, intermediate, more intermediate, gamers or professionals simultaneously.

If you are into gaming always go with Intel’s I series or AMD’s Ryzen series; the same thing applies to editors too who need high-end laptops. So try to buy maximum cores and stick with new generation according to your Budget. Best ones are i3, i5, and i7. In addition to this always try to purchase a processor with cache memory at least 3MB. This also increases the speed of data processing and enables enough space for multitasking.

RAM (Memory): The non-volatile memory of the system is also major things to detect while purchasing the laptop. The higher space (RAM) is helpful to process the data from the hard disk to user. If hard-disk is larger, then the system will get more space to perform the programs all there would be fewer chances for system hang. But it should be compatible with the processor speed so it also big players in the working. There are many types of RAM available in the market like DDR2, DDR3 and DDR4. The latest one and fastest and economical is DDR4. So please confirm the RAM before purchasing it.

The second thing the laptop should have at least two slots for RAM so that in future if you want expands the memory you can expand it without removing the first one. Some subsystem comes with 2GB of RAM, some budget laptop comes with 4GB or 8GB of RAM and if you spend little more you may find some laptop models with 16GB which is definitely beneficial for High-End Games and CAD or Graphics Programs.

Graphics: You will find this option more confusing since there are tons of models, so indirectly you can prefer top contenders which are NVIDIA and AMD. You just need to pick one with better graphics memory. 2GB is essential of graphics intensive works and 4GB is required for high-end gaming.

The most popular one from NVIDIA is GTX 1080 which is capable of playing all the heavy games with highest frame rates. For mediocre users, GTX 1050, 1060 and 1070 will be more than enough.

Storage: The Hard Disk is also a major key player in laptop selection the hard drive should be at least 500 GB to 1TB. This will complete all your storing need. The hard disk is place where we want to store all small and big things like pictures, movies, and songs etc. This all need a heavy and grand space where it all can store. Actually, the large space saves money also which we spend on the external storage when storage runs out. Hard Disk also improves the response time of the system, how easily it delivers the data to processor the speed of system boost.

Most new laptops are equipped with SSDs (Solid State Drives) which is 10x times faster than any tradition HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and it does not make any spinning sound, but in the same time it costs more than HDD. Still for storage HDDs are the ideal solution because of its cost, but for a performance, we all must stick with SSDs.

Touch Screen: As technology is getting advanced, there are many systems you will find with a touch screen or 2-in-1 which have laptop mode as well as tablet mode. From a business point of view this option isn’t useful but if you are a home user then you can think of using such features.

These are all the things you have to watch before buying a laptop. And last but not least the price the budget should be in your control. So try to utilize the maximum value of money while purchasing the laptop with above tips.

System Software or OS

From the software point of view, you won’t find many hurdles as there are very few things to choose.

MacOS: A Unix based system which is designed by Apple called MacOS. It is known to be one of the robust systems for graphics users and researchers as there is a very limited issue with MacOS regarding hardware issues since it is running on Apple’s own designed hardware.

Windows: Windows is always known as one of the most flexible operating systems which are used in business as well as consumer world. Since Windows 10 is designed for all users; it is easy to operate and you will find better software support on this.

Linux: If you don’t want to spend system software you will find Linux as a free source. In Linux, you will find numbers of Distributions which are free to download and use, like, Ubuntu, Ubuntu Mate, Linux Mint and etc. If you are the newbie or just want the Internet and basic office programs then Linux is cheapest and most reliable option.

ChromeOS: Based on Linux, Google has its own OS called Chrome OS which works on the Internet. If you are a fan of Chrome browser and 99% of your task is based on browser then Chrome OS is the best software for you. Even there are many budget-friendly laptops which packed with ChromeOS.

A notebook with three days of battery life: It’s coming

Is this the dawn of the multi-day laptop battery?

“Always connected personal computer or ACPCs refers to the three characteristics of the new generation of Windows notebook computer: a multi day battery; instant access when you open the lid or the touch of a button; and an optional high-speed wireless connection, to avoid a Wi-Fi hotspot Internet hunting.

In other words, your laptop is going to behave a lot more like your smartphone.

Qualcomm – the world’s largest smartphone chip maker — is largely spearheading this emerging category. This marks the San Diego-based company’s second foray into the computer space, after the Windows RT mobile operating system failed to catch on after it debuted in 2012.

Intel is also a major player in this space, having worked on the first cellular-supported PC back in 2005 (with Sony). It’s been heavily involved in Sony vgp-bps2c notebook battery improvements over the past few years.

But if you believe the hype, what we’ll see debut in 2018 will be nothing like we’ve witnessed in the past.

“With computers we have today, you’re lucky if you can get 15 hours of battery performance — and in most cases, it’s 8 to 10 hours, if that – so where I see the breakthrough here is a new benchmark of 22 hours, and standby of at least a week,” says technology analyst Tim Bajarin, who also serves as president at Creative Strategies, one of the first market research firms in Silicon Valley.

In fact, with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, ASUS is claiming Asus a32-m50 laptop battery life of up to 22 hours of continuous video playback, and up to 30 days on standby.

At $799, the ASUS NovaGo (model # TP370) will also be the first always-connected PC with a 360-degree flip hinge – making it a “2-in-1” that can convert from laptop mode to a tablet by bending back the 13.3-inch screen – and the first with Gigabit LTE speeds,  for an always on, always connected experience.

“I’ve been using these devices for many months, and the one thing that often gets overlooked is the ‘always on’ feature,” adds Miguel Nunes, senior director of product management at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Like your smartphone, even when the screen is off, it’s still connected, so when I open the lid, it does facial recognition, and I’m in.”

Speed boon, too

Along with multi-day battery performance, these always-on PC’s take advantage of ubiquitous cellular connectivity.

“With the NovaGo, you don’t have to find a Wi-Fi hotspot, and you get fast 1 gigabyte-per-second wireless Internet speeds that are between 3 to 7 times faster than the average broadband speed,” says Randall Grilli, director of media relations at ASUS North America. “It allows you to download a 2-hour movie in about 10 seconds.”

ASUS is supporting both a nano SIM and built-in eSIM, the latter of which allows you to easily switch networks in areas that support it, says Grilli.

Cellular connectivity is optional with always-connected PCs, since the user must pay for data. Details are still scarce on provider pricing plans — ASUS says users may work directly with Microsoft on data plan activation or directly with a provider, for instance — but SIM-supported laptops haven’t been adopted by the mainstream in the past, reminds Bajarin.

“Consumers are often reluctant to pay extra money for an additional data SIM, so until we see people actually putting down dollars for connectivity, I’m not sure if that will drive ACPCs,” says Bajarin. “What will drive this is 22 hours of battery. Ultimately, the consumer wants all-day computing, even though always-connected would be a good feature, too.”

Tradeoffs? Perhaps

These always-on PCs sound amazing, no doubt, between long battery life, always-on architecture, and LTE connectivity. So, what’s the catch, you ask?

Though it’s too early to know for sure, power and compatibility might not be what you’re used to with previous Windows laptops.

Intel has been trying to make PC’s more mobile for six or seven years, with ultrabooks, then with 3G and LTE connectivity options — say with the LTE-supported Samsung Galaxy Book 12, with Verizon.

“First and foremost, it must be a great PC. It has to deliver performance…and PC experiences…that consumer expect,” said Josh Newman, general manager of mobile innovation segment for Intel.

Newman says when consumers take the new PC out of the box “it should just work with all the software they’re used to working – and work better than the 4- or 5-year-old PC they may be replacing – and same goes for multitasking, and peripherals, too.”

Even Qualcomm concedes it’s not going after those that demand serious horsepower. “For full disclosure, we are not a high-end gaming PC. That’s not Qualcomm,” says Nunes. “Our strength is in mobility, thin and light devices, and with Microsoft, we focused heavily focused on what people are doing with their devices.”

While ASUS and HP have confirmed support for Qualcomm’s ACPCs, and other major players will likely unveil their wares early next week at the annual tech trade show CES in Las Vegas, not everyone is onboard.

“Dell is not planning to announce any PCs with Qualcomm Snapdragon processors in the foreseeable future,” said Jay Parker, president of the client product group at Dell, in a statement provided to USA TODAY.

“We have a strong portfolio of PCs for consumer and commercial customers that deliver excellent battery life with LTE connectivity – which constitutes ‘always on’ in the customer’s mind,” says Parker.  “We find that our customers don’t want to sacrifice full functionality and performance – that’s what our products deliver. The current Snapdragon processor doesn’t allow us to strike that right balance today.”

HP notebook battery alert: We’re recalling these models due to overheating fears

HP is recalling some notebook batteries because of fear of overheating and causing a fire and causing burns.

The company issued the worldwide recall on Thursday, urging customers to check batteries in several laptop and mobile workstation models sold between December 2015 and December 2017.

The affected batteries shipped with certain HP ProBook 64x (G2 and G3), HP ProBook 65x (G2 and G3), HP x360 310 G2, HP Envy m6, HP Pavilion x360, HP 11 notebooks, and HP ZBook (17 G3, 17 G4, and Studio G3) mobile workstations. Some of the affected batteries were also sold as replacements.

In many cases customers won’t be able to replace the batteries themselves since the power cells are internal, so HP is covering the cost of installing a replacement via an authorized technician.

The recall affects around 0.1 percent of HP systems sold globally over the past two years.

The US Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) says about 50,000 units are affected.

“HP has received eight reports of battery packs overheating, melting, or charring, including three reports of property damage totaling $4,500, with one report of a minor injury involving a first-degree burn to the hand,” CSPC said in a statement.

HP ended 2017 as the world’s largest PC vendor by shipments and the only vendor that actually increased shipments amid shrinking sales across the industry.

HP said it’s providing BIOS update to put affected batteries in Battery Safety Mode, which discharges the battery and prevents it from charging until Hp 485041-003 laptop battery Safety Mode is disabled. Users will still be able to use the device but only when connected to an HP power adapter.

To check whether a battery is affected, HP owners will need to download HP’s battery validation utility, which runs the check in about 30 seconds.

This time last year HP recalled 100,000 computers due to overheating batteries, which expanded a previous recall of 41,000 units over the same issues.

How to choose the correct Laptop Adapter?

Choosing the correct notebook adapter is the problem of voltage, output power and correct connection. If all of these things do not match the original specifications of your computer, a new laptop adapter will probably not work on your machine, and it may cause great damage. Finally, most of the replacement adapters will have a set of compatible computers.

The first thing to consider for the laptop adapter is the voltage. The easiest way to check this is to turn the computer over and see if there is a voltage listed anywhere on the bottom of the machine. A sticker may be affixed with this information and other similar laptop specs listed. It should be a number with a V attached to it, such as 19.5V. This information is also available on the original TOSHIBA PA3516E-1AC3 Laptop Power Adapter, if it is available.

The second thing to look for is the current output needed for the laptop adapter. This number will have an A of mA associated with it. For example, it may say something like 4.7A or 950mA. These numbers ensure that the power going to your machine will be acceptable and keep it operating within normal parameters. Not paying attention to either of these numbers could cause the electrical systems in the computer to malfunction and quit working altogether.

Once these two issues have been settled, the other important step is simply to make sure the connection fits the port in your computer where it is to be plugged in. The voltage and output current of the laptop adapter will not matter if it is not able to be connected. If ordering online or if you do not have your computer, it is advisable to check this out as soon as possible.

Many may choose the safest route possible and go with a replacement laptop adapter directly from the manufacturer, if available. While this is a good option, these parts may be more expensive than others that may be available from after-market manufacturers. Further, as long as the numbers match, all should work nearly the same and be just as safe and effective.

Another thing to consider is whether you want an AC laptop adapter or DC adapter. An Toshiba Satellite A100 AC Adapter is made to be plugged into any standard electrical outlet such as those in a home or office. The DC adapter is made for automobile use.

Dell vs HP Laptops – Find Out Which is Better, Dell or HP

Dell and Hewlett Packard are the two most trustworthy laptop manufacturers! As a matter of fact, both companies make desktop devices, but the market share is not based on this, you know. So if you need the best laptop, it’s natural if you doubt the relationship between Dell and HP. In fact, there are a lot of similarities between these brands. First, whether it’s making budgetary laptops or high-end laptops. From the customer’s point of view, you should have a clear view and choose a better laptop transaction.

In this HP vs Dell comparison, we will talk about both laptop brands. We can also go through aspects like pricing, support, features etc. In the end, we assure you something: you can pick the right laptop for your needs. We do understand that selection is tough, even when you are within a brand. So, we will also suggest two laptops from Dell and HP each. So, shall we start?

To start with, we will have an introduction to both Dell and HP, as laptop manufacturers.

Dell vs HP Laptops – An Intro

Dell Inc. is a multinational computing company, based in Texas, United States. It started 32 Years back, for providing both hardware and software services, particularly coming up with new devices. On September 7, 2016, it was merged to form Dell Technologies. Now, officially, Dell Technologies is into a variety of products such as Personal Computers, Smartphones and Networking and Hardware devices. Nevertheless, Dell is still noted for its varying range of Laptops and Desktops – not to mention the other hardware components. And, YES, you can find Dell laptops for almost all kinds of budgets.

Now that you have an idea about HP and Dell, we will move onto other aspects of this brand duo. Before that, however, we think it’s better to take a look at two of the popular devices from Dell vs HP.

Some of the Best Laptops from Dell and HP

1. From Dell

We have chosen the two different laptops from Dell, belonging to two various budget ranges. These devices don’t just come with best-in-class hardware but also are loved by different users out there.

Dell XPS 13 is one of the most popular and expensive laptops you can purchase from Dell. It packs in high-performance hardware specifications and the great support. At 2.6lbs, the weight isn’t a problem at all. If you are looking for a quite portable laptop for official use, Dell XPS 13 is the optimal choice. Let’s have a look at the specifications too.

Are you looking for a mid-range laptop that can fulfil your day-to-day digital requirements? Then, you should have a look at Dell Inspiron 3000, which is a budget-friendly choice. For the price you pay, you are getting standard processing speeds, connectivity options. Although not the lightest device in market, Inspiron 3000 is somewhat portable.

These are the products you can buy with confidence, from Dell. As you can see, the two choices are from premium as well as budget-friendly categories.

2. From HP

Here are the two selections from Hewlett Packard laptops. Of course, one is for the expensive budgets and another is for those who are budget-conscious. We hope it helps you select things better.

HP Spectre 13-v021nr is perhaps the best HP laptop you can purchase, if you have a huge enough budget for that. And it is the world’s thinnest laptop and the lightweight one, at just 2.45lbs. HP hasn’t compromised features or hardware richness to reach that state. It’s also one of the performance-oriented devices around.

If you are looking for the budget-friendly alternative for performance-based laptops, HP 15-ay018nr is the choice. It is packing in a bunch of high-end specs, but the pricing is just around $600. As it turns out, we found the HP 15-ay018nrto be an excellent choice for students and basic-level professionals. Its hardware specifications are impressive too.

You can consider these two products when you have sure to stick onto HP Laptops.

Now, we will move onto different aspects like performance, appearance etc.

Dell vs HP Laptops – Performance

Let’s keep things simple. In comparison, Hewlett Packard laptops are more suitable for performance. You’ll understand that by looking at the common specifications of HP laptops, even in the budget-friendly sector. You can surely find 4 GB of RAM in even the sub-$500 budget. Also, there are some other factors like the less amount of bloatware. HP does not put much complementary stuff in their laptops. So, in the end, when comparing, Dell lags a bit behind. If you are expecting the best-in-class performance for the price you pay, you should go for HP.

Dell vs Hp – Design and Appearance

Dell laptops are always noted for its varying designs and aesthetics. Depending on your budget, you can find a wider variety of compact designs within the brand. There are thin-profile ones and the thicker ones, subject to the types of hardware requirements you have.

Except a few cases, HP follows the rudimentary laptop designs. They are not, though. However, it’s hard to choose an impressive colour of pattern when you are into HP. If you need the answer in a few words, we will say HP is utilitarian when it comes to laptop designs and customization options. HP Spectre series can be included in the exceptional set of cases, by the way.

So, if you are concerned about different designs and patterns, you should go for Dell. But, there is another aspect too.

HP vs Dell – Customer Support

This is where Dell goes a lot ahead of Hewlett Packard. It could have been a tie between Dell vs HP, but Dell seems to be the upper-hand here. First of all, the customer support from Dell is timely. You can expect the replacement in the least time possible. There is also the fineness of quality and perfection. We have sometimes been amazed at the speed and perfection of Dell repairs and the courtesy.

This does not mean that HP is offering quality-less service for its laptops. They are also quick and very times. And, if you can use the web-based system, it’s pretty amazing too. That having said, the quality isn’t par with that of Dell. In fact, Dell is supposed to be the laptop brand with the best customer support — ever.

We hope that’s a good reason.

HP vs Dell Laptops – Pricing

Pricing is another area where HP has the upper-hand. As we mentioned earlier, HP laptops always come with the up-to-date set of hardware stuff. Even then, the retail purchase prices are very lower. in addition, you can get some extra discounts if you use one of the available discounts. The rates are even lower when compared to Dell. If we take some of the examples from hardware specification range, you will surely spot a difference of $100 or so. We suppose that’s an important factor for most of you people.

Dell vs HP Laptops – The Final Word

Now that we have compared the different aspects to decide which is better, Dell or HP. And, we can share our ultimate opinions now.

HP would be the better choice if you are concerned about high-class performance. Even in low-budget devices, you’ll spot the best performance. Also, we found out that, if running Windows 10 OS, the total usability of HP devices are something superb. There aren’t many bloatware to be mentioned, either. If you travel with laptop and looking for a a portable laptop then you can go for HP. The only problem with HP is the lack of new and innovative designs. Also, in comparison with Dell, the customer service may not be up to the mark.

On the other hand, Dell is for you when you need best-in-industry customer support. With Dell, you don’t have to be worried about replacements or repairs. You also get an ample amount of warranty with ever laptop purchase. Also, it offers better designs and features like Biometric access. The presence of bloatware may be a problem, though. When compared to HP, however, the pricing is a bit higher.

That’s how you make the selection from HP or Dell. We hope this article helps you choose the best laptop from Dell vs HP duel.

How to Clean Your Notebook

When was the last time you cleaned your laptop? Yes, we think so. This simple computer maintenance task will not only eliminate dust and dust, but also keep your laptop at its best.

Laptop Parts to Clean

The five general parts of the laptop you should keep clean are  the case, the LCD screen, the laptop keyboard (and touchpad), the ports, and the cooling vents.

You can also open up your laptop to expose and clean its cooling system (the fan and heat sink), but only attempt that if you’re comfortable opening up your laptop.

Cleaning the cooling system can help solve laptop overheating problems and related symptoms like your laptop freezing or having issues shutting down.

As always, defer to your laptop manufacturer’s manual for the recommended procedure for laptop cleaning.

Materials

You’ll need the following things to clean your laptop (click on the links to compare prices and buy them online):

Prepare to Clean

Clean the Laptop Case

Use the damp cloth to wipe down the exterior of the laptop. This will help you make it look brand-new again. Then open the lid and wipe the areas around your keyboard.

Clean the LCD Screen

Clean the display using the same cloth or a newly moistened one if the original is too grimy (again, don’t spray any solution directly on the screen). Use gentle circular motions or wipe the screen from left to right, top to bottom.

Clean the Keyboard and Touchpad

Use a can of compressed air to loosen and remove dirt, crumbs, and everything else that may be stuck in the keys. Alternately, you can turn the laptop over and gently shake out any loose debris, running your fingers over the keys to aid the process.

If you have stuck keys or a very dirty keyboard (due to spilled drinks, for example), you can also remove the individual keys and wipe beneath them with a cotton swab dipped in the cleaning solution. Be sure you check your laptop manual to make sure the keys can be removed for cleaning, and, of course, put them back the right way.

Some laptops have drains built into the keyboard tray. If yours is like that, you can pour distilled water into the keyboard and let it air-dry. Check your manual to be sure.

Finally, use the damp cloth to wipe the keys and the touchpad.

Clean the Ports and Cooling Vents

Use the can of compressed air to clean the case openings: the ports and cooling vents. Spray from an angle so the debris is blown away from the computer, rather than into it.

Also, be careful when spraying the fans, because if you spray too hard liquid may get in the fan blades. To prevent the fans from over spinning while you’re blowing the air on them (which can damage the fans), place a cotton swab or toothpick between the fan blades to hold them in place.

Last But Not Least

Make sure your laptop is completely dry before turning it on.

A video of how to clean your laptop is also available if you’d like more visual instructions.

An HP laptop, which is also a tablet computer that doesn’t frustrate you.

In June 2010 , I attended the All Things Digital meeting of the Wall Street Journal , when Steve Jobs said : ” When we ‘ re still one . But as people move more and more toward the city center , people begin to get into the car . I think PCs are like trucks . Less people will need them . ”

I was also present in April of that year when Jobs announced the iPad, and at the time, I called it “underwhelming.” Yes, I was impressed by the achievement, but I declared the device “too big to put in your pocket but not as easy to type on as a laptop.” For a while, the market proved me wrong. Early sales of iPads were impressive, but around 2015, we started to see the tablet market shrink.

A few years after Apple launched the iPad, tablets started losing market share, getting pressure from both sides. Laptops started to get smaller and more versatile and smartphones got larger. Even though I have purchased several tablets over the years from Apple, Amazon and various Android vendors, mine all sit in a drawer or have been donated to schools. That’s because my smartphone is now large enough to read ebooks and watch video, and it’s even big enough for a reasonably OK on-screen keyboard. But it’s also because laptops have shrunk in size and weight. Plus, if I really want to use a device in “tablet mode,” the laptop I’m carrying can accommodate that.

I’m currently testing the HP 12-inch EliteBook x360 1020 G2 “convertible” or “two-in-one” device, which, like Lenovo’s Yoga line, has a screen that can also be used in tablet mode. Actually, it can be positioned at any angle so it can also be tentlike to sit on a table or positioned so that the keyboard faces down.  Microsoft Surface PCs are also convertible, but their keyboards snap on and off so you can leave them at home if you want. As someone who does a lot of typing and rarely needs a tablet, I prefer the HP and Lenovo strategy.

The HP model I’m testing weighs 2.5 pounds (weight can vary by configuration and components), which is 1.3 pounds heavier than the first iPad. But even iPads have evolved into PCs. Apple now offers an optional keyboard for it iPad Pro, which turns it into a laptop that runs iOS. There are plenty of third-party keyboards for other iPads as well as Android tablets.

The new HP notebook shares another trait with tablets — its Hp 485041-003 laptop battery lasts all day. HP rates it for 15 hours, but like EPA mileage estimates, your experience will vary. Mine is never as good as what the manufacturer claims, partially because I use some energy-guzzling software, and I like a bright screen. But even if I only get 10 hours of battery life, that’s still enough to leave the power supply at home. And speaking of that, having a 2.5-pound laptop in my backpack is relatively easy on my back, which I will appreciate next month when I’m carrying it around during my five days at the CES trade show in Las Vegas. HP says that you can get a 50 percent charge in 30 minutes.

HP offers several versions of its EliteBooks. The one I’m testing comes with 8 gigabytes of memory and 256 GB of storage

It also comes with a pen (which I’ve already misplaced) that lets you draw on the screen. I wish there were a storage slot for that pen, but that might have made it harder to keep the device as thin (about a half an inch) as it is. There are two USB C ports and an HDMI port for a TV or monitor. I’d be happier if it came with a standard USB A port, but that was jettisoned to keep the device smaller. There are adapters for less than $5 that easily attach to any USB device. Unlike new iPhones and some Android phones, there is a standard headphone/microphone jack. Like many new phones, you can unlock it with a fingerprint. And unlike any MacBook, it has a touch screen, which I find more useful than I had imagined.

The EliteBook that I’m testing sells for $1,599 but you can pay less or more, depending on storage and other features. Some models come with HP Sure View, which is a built-in privacy screen that’s activated by a key press. The model I’m testing has a full high-definition screen, but you can get them with ultra-high definition (UHD) for those who care about the highest possible resolution. Aside from costing more, both Sure View and UHD use more energy, so I’d rather have more battery life and a few extra dollars in my pocket.

HP also has other models including a 13-inch 1030 series and the 14-inch 1040 series that are similarly priced, with varying features. Unlike smartphones, bigger isn’t necessarily more expensive when it comes to laptops. For some people, “less is more,” when it comes to size and weight.

I can’t help but think about that Steve Jobs quote about cars vs. trucks. If a laptop is a “truck,” then I guess I’m a PC driver. But like millions of people who drive pick-up trucks, I prefer laptops that are small, light, rugged, versatile and energy-efficient that can be used for work and play.
